As we continue our series introducing the organisations driving the UrbanAIR project, we’re pleased to feature NORCE – Norwegian Research Centre.
UrbanAIR is a Horizon Europe project developing a digital twin for cities to tackle urban heat and air pollution. Each week, we’re spotlighting a partner helping make cities healthier and more climate resilient.
About NORCE
NORCE is one of Norway’s leading independent research institutes. It conducts applied research across energy, climate, environment, health, society, and technology. With projects in both public and private sectors, NORCE supports decision-making through science-based insights that promote sustainability and value creation—locally, nationally, and internationally.
NORCE is known for its interdisciplinary work and its ability to deliver targeted, practical research that informs policy and innovation alike.

NORCE's Role in UrbanAIR
NORCE contributes advanced expertise in uncertainty modelling and data assimilation for UrbanAIR’s high-resolution climate models. This includes improving how uncertainty is represented in Large Eddy Simulations (LES)—a method used to capture turbulence and airflow in urban environments at detailed spatial scales.
These contributions are crucial to strengthening UrbanAIR’s digital twin by improving the accuracy and reliability of the model outputs that city planners and policymakers will use to make data-informed decisions.
